Summer Workshops 2010

Wonderland Productions present these weeklong workshop in Newbridge and in Bray for budding performers. Participants will immerse themselves in Wonderland’s world of drama, music and song-writing, dance, clown, comedy, site-specific performances and theatre design. From backstage to centre stage this workshop will offer every child a chance to shine.

Wonderland’s workshops uniquely combine a stage school with the work of a professional musical theatre company. Every teacher is also a working theatre practitioner and a part of Wonderland’s success story, and some of our students have even gone on to appear in some of their productions!

Every Wonderland Workshop’s aim is to make friends, to perform, to learn lots too, but most importantly to encourage each young performer to grow and develop through the performing arts - and just as importantly to have a lot of fun together.

Booking for these workshops can be done through each venue. There are also a certain number of tickets allocated in Newbridge for disadvantaged children. Contact Mermaid Arts Centre, or Newbridge Arts Centre to arrange tickets.

(with Sarajane Bloomer and Alice Coghlan)

Taney Parish Centre, Dundrum, Dublin 14.
Tuesday & Wednesday afternoons from October 4th.

A comprehensive introduction
to the exciting world of theatre with Wonderland Productions Ltd. Dublin’s up and coming musical theatre company. Explore the world of dance and drama with classically trained young Irish theatre professionals. Workshop leaders Sarajane Bloomer (dance) and Alice Coghlan (drama) both have over a decade’s theatre teaching and production experience.
  • Theatre skills developed through our core drama and dance workshops, with the option to perform in our lively end of term variety show.
  • Dance training that develops strength and flexibility as well as exploring a wide range of dance styles; contemporary, jazz, salsa, hip-hop and many more.
  • Guest teachers from Wonderland Productions’ acting corps and the world of Irish theatre.
  • Lively theatre classes, where the onus is as much on having fun and making friends through drama and dance, as it is on learning.
  • Stimulating classes, which encourage personality development, increased self-confidence, creativity and artistic awareness in our students.
  • Special Master Classes arranged in international theatre styles. In 2005-6 we will host theatre directors from Mexico, Kenya, Romania, Greece and Spain.
  • Opportunity to be considered for casting in Wonderland Productions’ future professional shows in Dublin.
  • All levels of experience accommodated and no previous theatre experience necessary.
  • Small class sizes allowing for lots of individual attention.
  • Limited places available.

Core classical dance techniques. Strength and flexibility training. Introduction to several genres of dance; contemporary, jazz, salsa, traditional Irish, hip-hop and much more. Fully choreographed dance routines in varying styles. Training in the art of choreography.

The Drama Workshops

These fun classes will include work in the following areas: Creating a character on stage. Interpreting a character from a script. Voice training and projection, diction, modulation and breathing exercises. Theatre games and improvisations. Movement and mime. Reading plays, poems and prose aloud. Performing with an accent. Storytelling and Imagination exercises.

Introduction to scenes and characters from modern and classic plays through performance. Optional visits to Dublin theatre and dance performances. Optional training in the arts of directing and writing. The structure of the junior and senior workshops will be quite similar, however, the level of difficulty and intensity will differ among different ages and abilities. The students themselves will also play a key role in directing the content of the workshops.

The Performance Workshop

All workshop students will have the opportunity to attend a separate Performance Workshop. This will be a two-hour intensive class on Wednesday afternoons where the students will work alongside both Alice and Sarajane to create, design and rehearse a Variety Showcase which will be performed at the end of term. The show will consist of drama, dance, comedy sketches, dramatic scenes, musical theatre numbers and improvisations devised by the students.

This is an opportunity for the students to put into practice their newfound skills and also a chance to explore their own creative ability. From stage management to script writing, costume design to chorus choreography the students will experience the exciting world of theatre production first hand.
